Best Nuts for Diabetics
Managing blood sugar means paying close attention to what you snack on between meals. Most snack foods spike glucose and leave you chasing your numbers for the rest of the day. Nuts are a reliable exception and the research on which ones work best for Type 2 diabetes is more specific than most people realize.
Walnuts are the standout for diabetes risk specifically. A study of more than 34,000 people found that walnut eaters were half as likely to have diabetes compared to those who ate no nuts. For those already managing the condition, walnuts reduce fasting insulin levels and deliver ALA omega-3s that protect against diabetic neuropathy, one of the most common complications of long-term diabetes.
Almonds are the most studied nut for glycemic control. Clinical trials have shown that 60g of almonds daily reduces fasting glucose levels, markers of insulin resistance, and LDL cholesterol simultaneously. A one-ounce serving also provides about 80mg of magnesium, and magnesium deficiency is common in people with Type 2 diabetes.
Cashews improve HDL cholesterol and lower serum insulin levels without raising blood sugar, even in 12-week randomized controlled trials. Pistachios and Brazil nuts round out a rotation that supports cardiovascular health, especially important given that diabetics face elevated heart disease risk.
All nuts here are raw, sprouted, and unsalted. No honey roasting, no sugar coating, no sodium. There’s nothing that undermines the glycemic benefit the research is built on.
